Information about Community Support Services
in Southeast Ontario

Community Support Services are provided by local, not-for-profit agencies.  Such agencies co-ordinate the effort of many caring and committed volunteers.  These support services are flexible, personalized, responsive and least intrusive.  They focus on health and wellness and are strongly centred on the client's need.  They strengthen the ability of family and neighbours to support the choice to live in the community.

The services provided include a broad range of practical support services designed to help the elderly and adults with physical disabilities accomplish the tasks of everyday living.

As required by the Ontario Long-Term Care Act, eligibility for services is based upon assessed need. When applying for Community Support Services people first meet with a co-ordinator to discuss their needs.

Some services are available at no charge while others have a reasonable client fee. Each agency provides services specific to the needs of its community.

Services include:
Meals on Wheels®
Congregate Dining (sometimes called Diners’ Club)
Escorted transportation
to medical and other appointments and assistance with getting groceries and other essentials

VOLUNTEERS
Community Support Services agencies have strong accountability to local boards of directors.  Countless volunteer hours are involved in service delivery and fundraising.  These agencies are vibrant and viable and have deep roots in their communities.  Community Support Services agencies are incorporated, and are registered charities.

SPECIALIZED SERVICES
There are also agencies offering specialized services through The Canadian Hearing Society, the Alzheimer Society, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Providence Care, Hospice and Palliative Care programs, March of Dimes, and attendant care outreach services for adults with physical disabilities.
